the fire

Tonight while I was home alone with the dog reading in front of the fire, things got a little interesting. Bryan came home and mentioned that the fire seemed particularly smokey, I hadn’t noticed anything. We opened the windows flanking the fireplace, and rather than letting smoke out, smoke came pouring in. Bryan looked outside and saw the flames in the reflection of our neighbor’s window. “The house is on fire, let’s go!” He grabbed Guinness and I grabbed my phone and the fire extinguisher.

By the time we were outside, Bryan had already called 911 and the fire department was on their way. He put out what he could of the fire with our extinguisher, while I took care of Guinness. The police, fire department and EMT’s arrived in tandem, and went to work putting out the rest of the fire, then dismantling the side of our house. For the next hour and a half I sat in my car with the dog, calling parents to update them, and the insurance company to put in a claim.

The fire inspector’s speculation is that the mortar between the bricks was crumbling, and building up between the chimney wall and the siding. Over time, it dried out and eventually caught fire tonight from the heat of the bricks (400 degrees, BTW.) We’re a little confused as to why neither the home inspector nor the chimney cleaner/inspector noticed that, but maybe it was something that they could’ve have known. Who knows.

Apparently, we were very lucky. Because Bryan both noticed it so early on, AND because he was quick with the fire extinguisher, it wasn’t nearly as bad as it could’ve been. A few more minutes longer and it would’ve spread to the insulation, which would’ve made the whole house go up pretty quickly.

We stuck around the house for a few hours afterwards, debating whether or not to go stay in a hotel (insurance covers it under our discretion). We would’ve preferred to stay home, but after an hour in the house even with windows opened to air it out, we still got headaches from the burnt vinyl smell that was lingering. So, I packed Guinness up and headed over to the Residence Inn while Bryan stayed back to wait for the fire place guy.

So, to answer everyone’s queries, we are fine. Shaken and embarrassed, but fine. Thank you all so much for your well wishes, and offers of assistance, we really appreciate it. I’ll keep everyone updated on the when the hole in our house is mended.

Note: In response to this open letter my sister-in-law (who is neither an intern, nor anyone else living with the results of poor footwear choices, i.e., she has killer shoes, too) quipped, "You recognize that you are, in fact, a completely insane person, yes?" I may be insane, but at least my shoes are fabulous. The intern population at large could learn a lesson or two from my shoe collection. So there.

Setting: The Dubliner pub in Mohegan Sun casino AFTER dancing on stage with Chubby Checker at his free concert (i.e., I was more than a little hyper, which as everyone knows, never leads to good things) with "The Girls" (my crew of girlfriends from high school who are the coolest and most-willing-to-get-into-crazy-shenanigans-while-also-putting-up-with-my-nonsense gals a psychotic red-head could ever want to associate with, AKA "The Pea Coat Mafia.")

We enter the crowded pub and head straight for the bar, where immediately Some Dude buys us drinks because he found out he's from three towns away from us and, "Small world!" OR, this is one of the only two fun places to go within a 300 mile radius of Our Town, and it's raining cats and dogs in NYC. There's probably 50 other people here just from our high school, but whatever Dude, we'll take your free beverages, just don't think that means we're talking to you afterwards. (The Girls are here for The Girls alone, we can entertain ourselves without outside help, as proved by the "Twenty Minutes" ahem, HOUR we waited for our table at Michael Jordan's Sports Cafe in the empty hallway outside the restaurant. But I digress...)

We move away from Some Dude and are immediately approached by Blonde Guy, who wants to take a poll.

Blonde Guy: What is sexier on a guy, a chest tattoo, or a navel tattoo?

The Girls: :::confused::: Navel? What do you mean by navel?

Blonde Guy: Yeah, navel. My buddy over there (pointing to a guy wearing sunglasses in a dark pub at night, don't get me started) has Celtic knots all around his belly button.

The Girls: :::shock::: Um, definitely chest.

Blonde Guy: :::looking victorious:::

Kara: Wait a minute... It depends, does your buddy like boys, or girls?

Blonde Guy & The Girls: :::laughter:::

Kara: I'm SERIOUS, people...

Blonde Guy: He likes girls.

Kara: Oh, yeah, definitely the chest. A belly-button tattoo is totally girly.

Blonde Guy then returns to his effeminately-tattooed Buddy to recount his findings, as we grab ourselves a table. I spend the rest of the evening dodging death stares from certain effeminately-tattooed people; in between what I'm sure were snorting runs to the men's room every 15 minutes. Later, a drunk lady-friend of the effeminately-tattooed "accidentally" spills ice all over Suzie and we take that as our cue to leave (it was either that or the Bachelor party that was hitting on the group at large, I can't remember.)

I'm sorry to all of the accidentally effeminately-tattooed straight men out there if I've offended you, but these are the kinds of polls one takes BEFORE one permanently alters one's body in what may be construed as a terrifically girly fashion. Duh.

The upcoming Fall TV schedule is out, and a very busy fall it will be, indeed! The DVR might implode on Monday's and Wednesday's, but oh how entertaining it will be!

I don't think we're trying out many new shows this season, there doesn't look to be a whole lot out there that's worth watching. Just these few:

Kath & Kim: This is based on an Aussie comedy of the same name, Bryan got them for us to watch after the commercials for the new show nearly made me wet my pants.

Do Not Disturb: Jerry O'Connell from Carpoolers (yes, it was canceled, sad indeed) and Niecy Nash from Reno 911!, how could this fail to be funny?

Fringe: A Sci-Fi Drama with Pacey Witter in it? Count me in.

90210: It may be blasphemous, but come on! Brenda and Kelly are back as guidance counselors? Even if there's only one cat fight per season, it'll be worth the teen angst.

It's shaping up to be a fabulous fall! And even if they cancel everything I love, Joss is coming out with a new show, Dollhouse, this winter! I may do cartwheels out of sheer excitement. Hooray!

One last note, here's one I may have to watch just to see it with my own eyes, Hole in the Wall. Words can't do it justice, you must watch a clip from the original Japanese version:

spinach strawberry salad

After being told that I was far too old to jump in the giant strawberry bouncy house at my local farmer's market's Strawberry Festival a few weeks ago, I picked up a recipe as a consullation prize. Turns out it was WAY better than I had expected.

Spinach Strawberry Salad

1/2 c. sugar
1 Tbs. poppy seeds
2 Tbs. sesame seeds
1 1/2 tsp. minced onion
1/4 tsp. paprika
1/4 c. cider vinegar
1/4 c. wine vinegar
1/2 c. canola oil
2 Tbs. butter
3/4 c. slivered almonds
1 lb. baby spinach, washed and dried
1 pint strawberries, sliced

1) Put sugar, seeds, onions, paprika, vinegars and oil in shaker jar. Shake to emulsify.

2) Melt butter in skillet over medium heat. Add almonds; cook and stir until lightly toasted, 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

3) Combine spinach, strawberries and almonds in serving bowl. Pour half of dressing over and toss. Add more dressing as desired. Serve and enjoy!

(Makes 8 servings.)

I apologize for my recent absence from bloggerville, but after a very trying "busy season" at work, I've been doing my best to do absolutely nothing, and have succeeded.

Right now the fourth season of So You Think You Can Dance is on, and with the new season of Big Love being pushed back to January 2009 (don't even get me started,) that's about the only thing on TV worth paying attention to, leaving me high and dry for the vast majority of the week. So, in another attempt to bolster my TV repertoire, I have begun to watch shows that I missed, skipped, or never got in to.

As a fanatic of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I started with his short-lived series, Firefly. A mere 14 episodes and feature film later, I was in love and left with no where to turn. So I watched it again. Yet more sadness filled me as I realized that it aired long before it's time. Sigh. Move on, Kara.

My mom is a big fan of Brothers and Sisters, and I saw a random episode while visiting her one Sunday, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Two seasons of this drama later, I realize that everything can be solved in a 60 minute episode, and it seems to have more love triangles than 90210. Still worth watching, for now.

People have been telling me that 30 Rock is "awesome," and that they "can't believe" I'm not watching it already. Well, I made it halfway through the first season and gave up. I generally adore Tina Fey, and I love Alec Baldwin, it's everyone else that I hate. I returned the second half of the season to Netflix without even opening the envelopes.

I had heard from a friend that Dexter was "twisted and dark," which sounded like something I'd enjoy. It's a seriously messed up show, but I love it. I just finished the second season and can't wait for number three this fall.

Now I'm moving on to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I've heard that it's awful and that it's great, but with both Summer Glau (from the aforementioned Firefly) and Lena Headly (from 300) in it's roster, I have to give it a shot. Here's hoping!

devil's food cookies

A friend made these delicious cookies for a recent gathering and I just about died and went to heaven while eating them. Imagine all the deliciousness of a Devil's Food Cake in the convenience of a cookie! Marvelous, I tell you.

The recipe is from The Food Network, and its hella easy. Behold: (italicized items were left out of my recipe according to my personal preferences.)

1 box devil's food cake mix
2 eggs
1/4 cup water or hot coffee
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
3/4 cup bits of chocolate-toffee candy

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Combine cake mix, eggs, water, oil and flour in large bowl. Beat on low speed until all ingredients are moistened, then beat on high speed for 2 minutes. Dough will be sticky. Fold in chips, nuts and candy until evenly distributed. Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.

Bake for 12 to 14 minutes. Let the cookies cool for 4 to 5 minutes until firm. Serve slightly warm or store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks (not that they'll last that long.) Enjoy!

long time no blog

Good Lord, it's been ages. I promise we're still alive, just terribly busy. I plan on blogging more in the near future, as soon as things at work and home calm down a bit. Some things that have been happening:

Guinness: He's been sick for a while, he caught some nasty stomach bug from another dog at camp and has been messing all over the house for about a week and a half now. I think we alone are keeping the Vet in business. He seems to be doing better though, thank God.
Cars: We both got new cars in the past month. We were terribly excited to begin with, and after remembering what a pain in the ass it is to car shop, we finally got it over with. I ended up with a Pilot and Bryan got a Sonata. I think we're banned from both Sales floors as a result of the insane deals we got on both. Bryan drives a hard bargain.
Work: We've been working like crazy, Bryan more than me (to say the very least.) I'm not sure he's had a day off since Christmas...
Home: The house is a total disaster area as a result of all of the above, and I can't remember the last time I did laundry. I'm either going to have to go buy us new wardrobes this week, or remember where the washer is, stat.

Suffice it to say, it's been a bit insane. We both need naps, or maybe just straight hibernation for a bit.

Post Secret is one of my favorite websites, (as you can see to your left) and I've been trying to come up with something good to share and send in. I finally thought of something and created (what I think is) a great visual rendition of my secret. Unfortunately, it's not really a secret, (several people know, actually) and sending it in would be violating one of the only rules of the website, "Reveal anything - as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before."

I decided not to send it in. I sent it to Bryan. He passed it around to his work buddies. They taped it to their walls. So if they can see it, so can you. Enjoy.

new life plan

I think I'm going to quit my job. Don't worry, this isn't a rash decision, I've got it all planned out.

This morning on my way in to work (yes, I had to work on a Saturday, vomit) I was craving some delicious Baked Potato Soup from Panera Bread, so I had to drive all the way out to East Greenbush to get some. It was either that, or drive to Schenectady or Latham. How absurd is it that there isn't a Panera in Albany? I'll tell you. VERY absurd.

So, the new plan, first wave:

Quit job;
Open Panera franchise in Empire State Plaza; and
Help State workers become fatter and more listless.

The second wave of my plan involves either petitioning Panera HQ to serve Baked Potato Soup every day of the week (you can only get it on a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday) or just throwing the rules out the window and being the only franchise to have it ever-available. I can't decide which is better... Either way it's total rubbish that you can get Broccoli effing Cheddar every day and they horde the precious Baked Potato concoction for three measly days a week. Rubbish, I say.

So, there you have it. New life plan. Good, eh?

Happy New Year, everyone, and Happy Birthday, Porter! I'm sure everyone has big plans to celebrate tonight, and will make a laundry list of resolutions for the new year. Eat healthier, quit smoking, keep up on correspondence, get to the gym (which is why gym memberships skyrocket in the first month of the year and taper off around St. Patty's Day.)

I don't happen to believe in New Year's resolutions. If you are going to make a change, do it straight away, even if straight away happens to be in September. I tend to think waiting until January first is sort of a cop-out. It gives you however many more months/weeks/days to continue doing the horrid thing you're trying to stop, and then it all goes to hell a month or two after the new year anyway. With me, these changes or resolutions nearly always fail, so it's much less unpleasant to feel like a failure straight away than it is to build it up for three months, try and THEN fail. See my logic?

Anyhoodle, I really should cut down on my swearing. I'll start trying right now, rather than waiting until tomorrow. See what a sport I am? Such sacrifices I make.

merry christmas

Christmas came early for Bryan and I this year. Yesterday, while sitting in front of the fire together, we decided that it was the perfect moment to exchange our Christmas gifts. We gave Guinness one of his giant candy cane bones and he went to town. Bryan gave me some fabulous J.Crew wellies that I wanted (wore them to work today, quite hard to drive in wellies, actually...), some new undies from Victoria's Secret, more Envirosax bags, one of the Post Secret books that I so desperately wanted and a gift card to B&N to choose another one for myself. Good haul! Bryan got some new pants from Banana Republic, sweatpants from Timberland (his favorite) and a plethora of men's casual socks (you MUST call them that) and boxers from Banana Republic and The Gap. He was a happy camper.

Tonight we'll be celebrating with his family at his Aunt's house by eating way too much food (as is tradition) and exchanging gifts with his extended family. Afterwards, it's back to his parents' house to exchange gifts with the immediate family, then it's home to bed.

Tomorrow morning we head down to my parents' house for the immediate family gift exchange, then a big hoopla with the extended family and more food and gifts.

It's going to be a great Christmas, there's even a chance of flurries tonight! Merry Christmas to all and to all a great night.

pushing daisies

With the writers strike in full force there's not much in the way of television to look forward to. Thankfully, Pushing Daisies is new tomorrow. Of all the shows on this season, new and old alike, PD has to be the best yet. As I've said before, it's smart, funny, artful, detailed, original and always surprising. (If it's not already on your list of shows to TiVo, please add it ASAP, I promise you'll thank me.) I can't wait to watch tomorrow night's episode, I'm going to savor every last second of its new-ness.

Last night I made my first Sugar Cookies batch of the Holiday Season, and they were delicious! My family has been making them for years, it's a Holiday tradition. It's probably a Betty Crocker recipe or something, but just in case it's not here you go:

Kara's Sugar Cookies with Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting

Cookies

1 cup butter, softened

1/4 tsp. salt

2 beaten eggs

4 Tbs. milk

4 cup flour (sift, measure, sift)

1 tsp. baking soda

1 cup sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 400º. Combine eggs, sugar & butter, beat well. Add milk & vanilla. Gradually add flour with baking soda and salt. Roll dough to even thickness (1/8 - 1/4 thickness) and cut with cookie cutters. Place on un-greased cookie sheet at least 1/2 inch apart. Bake 10 - 12 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool and add frosting.

Frosting

3 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup margarine or butter, softened

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

2-ish Tbs. milk

Mix sugar & butter, stir in vanilla and milk (milk should be added gradually according to smoothness), beat until smooth.

***Please note that I tend to make a batch and a half of frosting to every batch of cookies, as we like to enjoy what we call the "Bryan Special," which just means there's a ton of frosting on each cookie.***

My favorite meal of the year! Woo! Tonight I'll be baking. Tomorrow morning I'll get up to watch the parade and comment on how much better my color guard was than the bands that fly all the way to NYC from St. Louis or wherever. Then it's off to Bryan's parents’ house to gorge myself on food until I put myself in a tryptophan-induced coma. Then it’s early to bed and down to my parents’ house in the morning to shop with the crazies (and my mom) on Black Friday. It's going to be marvelous!

Yes, it's three days BEFORE Thanksgiving and I'm nearly done with my Christmas shopping. I need a few more things for Bryan and the puppy and then I'm all set. That's got to be a new record.

Last night I started wrapping for lack of something better to do and now I'm nearly done with that as well. I'd better get a tree soon to take care of the rest of my holiday urges.

guard dog

Apparently, we have a guard dog on our hands. Last night Bryan was out very late at a concert, so I had Guinness in bed with me. We were both asleep when the side door opened and Guinness flipped out. He was growling, barking, howling and running in circles. I kept trying to tell him it was his daddy, but he was too busy making a ruckus. I was half laughing at what a fuss he was making and half pissed at Bryan for not yelling to Guinness to let him know it was just him. Guinness ran downstairs to assess the situation, and completely ignored Bryan to run around the house and make sure it was just him. Once he had secured our home, he was ready to play with his dad. I guess that makes me comfortable with not having an alarm system.

One of the seven hand-written copies of J.K. Rowling’s, The Tales of Beedle the Bard (I expect this will fetch upwards of $2 million, so start saving your pennies);

New slippers; and
A Wii.

Completely reasonable, no?

As my darling sister has said on several occasions, “Pepsi is Kara’s drug of choice.” It’s like speed for me. At her graduation party I drank an estimated 7 Pepsi’s throughout the afternoon and evening, and at 2 am when the kids were playing beer pong in the garage and my parents were getting ready for bed, I was running around the yard dismantling the tent.

At my cousin’s engagement party, all the cousins got properly schnockered and the only one to get cut off was me. From Pepsi.

That’s what happens.

So I guess it’s ok that after I went to get a Pepsi this afternoon from the news stand, I dropped it on my way back into my office. Taking the advice from a passing coworker, I opened it gingerly over the trash can. It still exploded everywhere. Thus, I am Pepsi-less for a bit. Sigh. I may start to go into withdrawal soon.

halloween

Halloween was a total bust. For the first time, Bryan and I are in a neighborhood with lots of kids, so we thought for sure we'd get lots of trick-or-treaters, which means I bought 3 bags of candy. Sigh. Of course I didn't get home from work until after 6:00, and by then it was almost dark. I ran around with the dog quickly and prepped for kids, but barely any came. I think the doorbell rang 3 times, and was 2 or 3 kids each time, which means I didn't see any good costumes and we're left with a mound of candy. Oh well, at least I bought stuff we like. Mmm... Reese's Pieces...

Bryan and I have been waiting weeks to see The Darjeeling Limited, as it was released in NYC and only just recently came to our area. It’s a dry, dark comedy with the same director (Wes Anderson) as other movies we love (The Royal Tennenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) and much of the same cast, we were psyched.

We got to the 10:00 show on Saturday night with a few minutes to spare, and I rushed Bryan to the theater and told him to pee later so we could get our favorite seats (front row of the stadium seats to put our feet up.) We hurried down the corridor and noticed that it was the very last theater on the top floor, and that no one else was hurrying with us.

Bryan said, “I think this might be a private showing.”

“No way, we’ve been waiting weeks for this, how can we be the only ones?”

We were. We walked into a completely empty theater, and while I was excited to have first pick at the front row, I was sad that no one cared to see what would surely be a fantastic movie. By the time the opening credits rolled, about 13 other people had joined us.

The movie was, of course, amazing, but Bryan and I had a chat on the way home and decided that there’s not too many other people who would’ve appreciated that movie. He said, “When we were laughing, no one else was.” I guess I hadn’t noticed because I was laughing so hard.

He’s right though, I tried to think of any other people I know who would’ve enjoyed that, and I can’t think of many. Oh well, more seats for us, then.

meet the robinsons: part two

It was utter crap. I guess I was thinking it might be another fabulous Disney Pixar movie like A Bug's Life, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo or Monsters Inc. No such luck. It was one of those movies where they showed all the funny parts in the trailer, which means that was an hour and a half of my life and $20 that I'll never get back. Sigh. I hate telling Bryan he was right, it goes right to his head.

meet the robinsons: part one

I’ve wanted to see Meet the Robinsons since before it came out in theatres. I was going to use our pseudo-nephew as an excuse and take him to see it, but really it was for me. The timing never worked out so we never took him.

Fast forward a few months and this past Tuesday it came out on DVD. This weekend between Bryan and me we’ve been to 7 or 8 video stores, trying to find a copy of this freaking thing. No dice. Apparently moms with actual kids got there first.

This is when the conversation about purchasing the movie starts. I tell him I’ll use “my” money and he tells me it’s a waste of anyone’s money. Probably true, but after leaving a few more video stores empty handed, I head to Target and buy it for $19.99.

I feel bad about spending the money on it, but I had a wave of genius and told him that we had meant to see it in the movies, which would’ve cost us $20, plus popcorn, soda and candy and that would’ve been at least a $40 trip. So I’ve saved us $20; you’re welcome. That didn’t go over very well, but I still got to keep it.

Let’s hope the movie is good enough for me to have made such a fuss about it, but somehow I expect I’ll be disappointed. Sigh.

On my way back from picking up some tasty McDonalds fries, I passed the crazy maintenance guy (CMG) who is always talking to himself/his invisible friend/another personality, and watched him dip his fries into a milkshake. I immediately thought, "Ew!" and continued on. Upon further contemplation I realized that CMG is likely brilliant, and felt like an idiot myself for getting fries without a milkshake. Sigh.

flags, glorious flags

I have a completely irrational and probably unsettling attachment to my Post-It Flags. They sit prettily on my desk within arms reach at all times. I take them with me to meetings, and when I misplace them after a short voyage, I bolt around the office looking and asking after them. There's more in the supply closet, what's the big deal? I overuse them too, two or three to a page, if I can, and never the same color; I like to mix it up.

This means I'm unstable, doesn't it?

We took a trip to Amherst on Saturday. *Swoon*

On our way out of town we stopped at a new housing development to drool over the 2-6 acre plots of land and massive houses going up and sighed in "someday" tones.

We stopped in at the Lee Outlets on our way and I got a new pair of (you guessed it,) Shoes, while Bry got a few shirts.

When we arrived in Amherst we began at Bueno Y Sano, and ate 5 heavenly soft tacos between us. We moseyed on over to the town square to check out the Farmer's Market and Tibetan Festival (ahh, hippies) and then stopped at Antonio's for a few slices to go.

We made our way to Spirit Haus to fill the trunk with fabulous beer you can't get in NY (mostly BBC, Bryan's favorite) and then picked up our To Go order of 5 calzones from Bruno's. Sigh, it's no wonder I gained the Freshman 25.

We drove through campus and admired the empty grass where the frat houses used to be, and stopped at the UMass Campus Center Store to get me that sweatshirt (soooo comfy!) After some cajoling, I convinced Bryan that we needed to head out to Deerfield (about 20 minutes out of our way) to stop at Richardson's Candy Kitchen, where we managed to spend $50 on candy. How is that possible?

We finally headed home with full bellies and slid into food-comas from our fabulous day. We're planning on going back next month to do it all over again plus head to the Yankee Candle Factory Store. Gotta love the college town.

So, we’re a few weeks into the 2007 Fall TV Season (which feels like it’s churning out more new TV shows than ever before, or maybe I’m just paying closer attention) and I’m ready to reflect on the new shows I had in my queue:

Back to You – (Wednesday's @ 8 on FOX) What a surprising waste of time. I love Kelsey Grammer, and can watch him in just about anything, but this is the most contrived sitcom I think I’ve ever seen. I always hated Everybody Loves Raymond, and I thought it was the plot, or Ray himself, but it seems I may have it out for Patricia Heaton. Each time I hear her loud monotonic voice it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me, not to mention the fact that she always seems to be walking across the set and stopping with her hand on her hip just to hit her cues. About the only redeeming quality is Fred Willard playing his usual obliviously witty character, unfortunately it’s not enough to keep Back To You on our DVR list.

Big Shots – (Thursday's @ 10 on ABC) I couldn’t get through the first episode. I know, pilots are usually crap, but I just couldn’t deal with any of it. For one thing, it wasn’t believable that Joshua Malina was the one of the four main characters that had a mistress, and for another, it was ludicrous that he would take her to the same couples counselor that he was seeing with his wife. It’s just completely ridiculous.

Carpoolers – (Tuesday's @ 8:30 on ABC)It’s not The Office, but it’s pretty damned funny. Four guys in a carpool who spend 45 minutes together twice a day, but somehow manage to inject themselves into one another’s hysterical lives. Fred Goss plays a marriage counselor who is married to a woman he fears is now making more money than he is, and father to an inept son who he knows is making more money than he is. Jerry O’Connell is the charming newly-single Dentist whose ex-wife left him nothing but his ab-roller, Jerry Minor is a father to somewhere between 6 and 8 crazy kids, and Tim Peper is a newlywed living the “perfect” family life. See? There’s bound to be some crazy shenanigans there.

Dirty Sexy Money – (Wednesday's @ 10 on ABC) Guy’s absentee father dies in suspicious plane crash. Guy takes over father’s job as family lawyer to richest family in NY. Guy spends day and night cleaning up their sexcapades, scandals and tantrums while trying to find out who killed his father. Pretty good so far.

Gossip Girl – (Wednesday's @ 9 on The CW) If you liked The O.C., you’ll love it, as it’s basically a reincarnation. Maybe we’ll get 2 good years out of it before Josh Schwartz gets bored/distracted and the plot lines go down the shitter.

Journeyman – (Monday's @ 10 on NBC) So far I love it, but I can see where it would get weird. A guy all of a sudden starts involuntarily traveling back in time to “fix” certain events that he has no prior knowledge of to help the future. In the process he nearly loses his wife, job and family.

Private Practice – (Wednesday's @ 9 on ABC) As Grey’s Anatomy is going down the tubes, PP seems to already be there. I’m getting sick of Kate Walsh’s blank open-mouthed pouty stares, which apparently on Grey’s I dealt with because they were usually accompanied by a McDreamy or McSteamy entrance. Now she’s SOL. It seems like they discover new and weird diseases at their office practice every day, and nearly always end up treating someone in the hospital, while still having time to make house calls. Sooner or later they’re going to run out of weird diseases and then where will they be?

Pushing Daisies – (Wednesday's @ 8 on ABC) Lee Pace plays the man who runs The Pie Hole and has the ability to bring dead people back to life. Chi McBride plays his PI partner, and the two frequently visit morgues to momentarily bring murder victims back to life in order to help solve the murders and collect the reward money. They are joined by Kristin Chenoweth, who plays a waitress at The Pie Hole who is in love with her preoccupied boss, and Anna Friel who plays a murder victim the main character didn’t have the heart to make dead again. I really can’t say enough good things about this new show. It’s narrated by Jim Dale, who reads the American Harry Potter audio books, it’s new, it’s inventive, it’s bright and cheery while still being morbid and a bit creepy, the attention to detail is insane and it all revolves around pie. Mmmm…

Reaper – (Tuesday's @ 9 on ABC) Kid turns 21 and finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil. Kid reluctantly begins working for the devil as a bounty hunter for escaped souls. Kid learns important new lessons about himself in the process. It’s trite, but amusing, and unless something better is on, I’ll be watching it.

Tell Me You Love Me – (Sunday's @ 9 on HBO) I tried, really I did, but I can’t get over the soft-core porn and the fact that no one wears makeup. All of the women look like corpses walking around with no lip color.

That about wraps it up. Not a bad start to the TV year. I’m still waiting on Samantha Who?, which starts next week (Monday's @ 9:30 on ABC), so I’ll let you know how that goes.

very big trouble

I just got into very big trouble with Bryan over a sweatshirt. Really 2 or 3 sweatshirts though... See, I'm trying to convince him to go visit our college town, Amherst, MA this weekend, and though he really needs no convincing, I ran down a list of reasons for him:

1) We haven't been since this summer.
2) The food is kick-ass.
3) It's nearing mid-terms so the college kids won't be out (yeah, right.)
4) The puppy hasn't been on a road trip in a while.
5) The leaves are probably turning this weekend and it'll be so pretty.
6) It won't be too hot or too cold.
7) I recently ruined my UMass sweatshirt whilst eating something chocolaty and delicious and I could use a new one.

Then he got mad, because it's like an $80 sweatshirt which he and my sister bought for me after I lit the FIRST one on fire while attempting to cook (that's a story all on it's own, I was laughing at the fact that I was on fire and he was frantically trying to rip the sweatshirt off of me and put it out.)

So then I realized that I shouldn't have saved the sweatshirt one for last, so I vowed to pick a cheap one and never ruin it again (perhaps I'll scotch guard it and make sure it's flame retardant) and then threw in another reason just to cover my tracks:

8) The food is kick-ass. Again.

Another day with Kate and the boys and we're heading out to Indian Ladder to go apple picking, pet the animals, and pig out on cider donuts. This should be interesting, however, because out of the four of us I'm the tallest at 5'6". We'll have to make a human ladder to actually pick the apples, but I'm sure Aidan won't mind riding on my shoulders. Maybe today he'll teach me the different kinds of apples.

I took today off of work and spent the day with my friend Kate and her boys (my pseudo-nephews), Aidan (2 1/2) and Sean (3 weeks). Aside from being fun, it was also a learning experience. I learned that black and white cows are Holsteins and brown and white cows are called Hinterwalds (tell me why a two year old knows this?), that holding a sleeping three week old can calm any neurotic woman, and that I have been reincarnated as an airline pilot in a children's toy.

Aidan was allowed to choose a new toy for himself the other day, and chose the Fisher Price Little People Airplane, whose pilot happens to have red hair. When Aidan was playing with his new toy, Kate asked him who the pilot was (as he likes to name the little people) and he told her, "It's Kara!" She sent me a picture of little plastic me:

This weekend I did a massive Fall cleaning and spent 20 total hours scrubbing our house. 1634 square feet is a lot to clean, let me tell you. At any rate, I basically did nothing all weekend but clean, save for sleeping, the lovely dinner that Bryan took me too on Saturday night as a thank you (he couldn’t help for the most part because he’s studying for his CPA exam), and Sunday dinner and the in-laws (a staple.)

At the end of it all, I’ve never been so proud of our house, it looks amazing! I’ve taken to keeping the doors shut and sporadically opening them to smell how clean the rooms are. I know, I’m insane. Shut up, I inhaled a lot of cleaning fumes this weekend.

Side note: The Swiffer Sweeper Wet is total crap. I needed two wet pads to clean each full size room, and those babies are expensive.

After realizing what a detriment to our environment I was, I decided to do something about it. I am trying very hard to become a psychotic recycler in our home, and I've purchased some reusable grocery bags that I'm here to rave about. I bought the adorable and affordable bags from Delight.com, which is a great website with daily sales on fabulous items. I bought the Envirosax Ultra-Mod Black & White Reusable Grocery Bags, which I LOVE. They are relatively large bags that fold up and fit into a small carrying case, so that it's easy to keep them with you at all times for those emergency supermarket trips. They also come in more colorful designs if that's your thing: Delightfully Hip and Delightfully Pretty.

WebMD's Symptom Checker is just a BAD idea, especially for hypochondriacs like me. Every other symptom on there tells you to "Seek Immediate Emergency Medical Attention." That's why I got a spinal tap for a possible brain aneurysm (which turned out to be a migraine) last month, and that's why I think I may have a peptic ulcer this month, after vomiting up my McDonald's meal on Saturday. While on our way to a wedding in Harrisburg, PA this weekend, we stopped to get gas and received a nice treat: We had stopped at Pat Garrett’s Sheepskin Emporium/Gas Station!

What we had stumbled upon was too good to pass up, so I documented what I could without being blatantly rude.

Have you ever gone into the bathroom stall and realized that you had missed some buttons, or forgotten to sip your fly on your pants? And you feel a bit like an idiot and think, “Why didn’t I notice the breeze?” And then you think, “How long has it been since I last peed?” because you’re really thinking about how long you’ve been walking around looking like an asshole. Then you think about all the people you met in the hallway that you know well enough that they should’ve told you, and you make a mental note to mess with them in some way next week, but mostly you just vow to double and triple check your fly as frequently as possible in the future to avoid further embarrassment.

ghetto bowling

You will likely hear us refer to “ghetto bowling” frequently, especially around the weekends. We got bored one night this past winter and realized that we lived within walking distance of a bowling alley (which in itself we think is a bit “ghetto”), and started going fairly regularly on Friday and Saturday nights with whomever wanted to join us. A few weeks in it was pointed out that I was pretty good, and a few weeks after that I had my own personalized ball (teal!), shoes (pink!) and bag (owning these things also makes it “ghetto”.) Shortly after that I began kicking ass and taking names, until the summer rolled around and they closed the alley due to the fact that they don’t have air conditioning (the defining “ghetto” factor.) We’re just getting back into the swing of things now that the alley has re-opened for the cooler months, and we’ll probably be heading that way more frequently over the weekends, so be prepared to hear about it! Anyone in the area who wants to join us, bring it on!

I know it sounds weird, and maybe a little gross, but Chicken Balls (a.k.a. Mini Chicken Florentine a la Kara) are freaking delicious. I invented them last year after making a mistake while trying to re-create an hors d'oeuvre we had at our wedding. They're great as appetizers or as a main course. Here's the recipe:

1 lb. chicken breast, cut into 1” cubes
1 package McCormick Italian Seasoning mix
2 bags fresh baby spinach
6 scallions
3 garlic cloves
10 fresh basil leaves
1 lb. Parmesan cheese, shaved
4 tubes of Pillsbury flaky biscuits, or 60 frozen mini-quiche phyllo cups

In a large frying pan, sauté minced garlic and sliced scallions in extra virgin olive oil. Add sliced basil leaves, and then add baby spinach and sauté until wilted. In separate pan, sauté chicken breast cubes with Italian seasoning until cooked. Making sure to dump excess oil and liquid from both, combine chicken and spinach mixture in bowl, mix well. If using biscuits, flatten and stretch biscuit, dollop chicken and spinach mixture in the center of biscuit, top with parmesan cheese, and fold sides of biscuit up to make a closed ball. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. If using phyllo cups, dollop mixture into each cup and top with parmesan cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!

It’s a teeny space betwixt a pole and a handicapped spot that most people are afraid to squeeze into, but it’s not that bad and it’s really close to the elevators which is handy when I’m 45 minutes late for work. This morning there was actually a car parked in the adjacent handicapped space, but I decided to squeeze in anyway. Well, squeeze I did. I dented and scratched the front passenger door at 3 M.P.H. all by my lonesome. I guess that’s why no one ever parks there…

To save myself time I’ll post a link to The Impulsive Buy and say that I agree wholeheartedly, and also that if you are so desperate to try them that you drive to the market just to buy cakesters (not that anyone would…) and they only have the Chocolate Crème version left, don’t bother. Vomit-inducing, I promise.

what we're watching

Last week, when the new fall TV lineup came out, I decided that our TV schedule sucked last year, and that we were going to force ourselves to watch every new show with even the slightest possibility of being any good. This excited me, and I got to work on our weekly TV schedule, the date and time that each show began, as well as if it would be a show for us, or for just me. (I’m really not going to make Bryan watch Gossip Girl, though he’d probably love it.)

Old shows we watch include: Bones, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy, Prison Break, South Park, The Office and Weeds.

Old shows that we’ve decided we should be watching (and will rent the first seasons of) include: 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights (at the urging of Bill Simmons.)

Our new shows are: Back To You, Big Shots, Carpoolers, Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl, Journeyman (this looks horrible, but what can we say, we miss Rome), Private Practice, Pushing Daisies, Reaper and Tell Me You Love Me (a.k.a. Soft Core Porn.)

As you can see we’re either very busy and important, or excruciatingly bored and irrelevant. Only time will tell.
